Bayern Munich target historic fourth straight Bundesliga title - Sammer

Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer says the thought of becoming the first team to win four Bundesliga titles can drive them on this season.

Bayern won the German league three times in succession in the 1970s, 1980s and between 1998 and 2001.

No German team has won a fourth straight title, however, and Sammer believes that the unique achievement should provide ample incentive for the players.

"We've issued the players and the whole staff with a motto: this season we can make history," Sammer told SportBild.

"The prospect of achieving something that at this club [Oliver] Kahn, [Franz] Beckenbauer, [Stefan] Effenberg, [Gerd] Muller or [Lothar] Matthaus did not manage grips the players.

"Even the biggest of all time have never managed to win four league titles in a row. Maybe the current generation will therefore be the best -- that's a huge motivation."

One player who could help the Bavarians reach their goal is Brazilian midfielder Douglas Costa.

Costa, 24, joined Bayern from Shakhtar Donetsk for €30 million this summer and he impressed in the German champions' recent friendly victories in China.

The Brazilian played on the left wing against Valencia and then on the right against Inter on Tuesday.

"He's a real rocket," Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer told kicker. "He's had some really great sprints down the wings and he uses both feet, bringing the ball on the right or the left to the byline.

"He's very dangerous and will be a weapon for us."
