Joshua Kimmich wants Bayern role of Man United target Schweinsteiger

New Bayern Munich signing Joshua Kimmich has warned "role model" Bastian Schweinsteiger he is targeting his starting spot for the Bundesliga champions.

Kimmich, 20, agreed a deal to join Bayern from 2. Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in January, and has the ambition to take over the defensive midfield role of Germany captain Schweinsteiger.

Kimmich told German magazine kicker that he was not afraid to compete for his favoured role as a holding midfielder, saying: "I would not go to Bayern if I did not see a chance to play.

"Of course Schweini is a role model to me, but from next season on we'll be competitors."

Whether Kimmich will meet Schweinsteiger in Munich is still uncertain, with sources telling ESPN FC last month that Manchester United are targeting the 30-year-old World Cup winner.

Schweinsteiger's Bayern contract runs out in 2016 and he has announced he hold talks with the club about his future.

The midfielder joined Bayern in 1998 when he was 14, and has since won eight Bundesliga titles and the Champions league at the Allianz Arena.

After winning the World Cup with Germany in Brazil last summer, he missed the start of the 2014-15 season due to problems with his patellar tendon.

When he recovered he struggled to find his form for Pep Guardiola's side, and was only ranked ninth in kicker's list of Bundesliga holding midfielders.

Franz Beckenbauer has warned Schweinsteiger he would find it tough to move to Old Trafford, saying: "It is hard to adapt to another top European league at his age. He should stay at Bayern, where he can play at the top level for another year or two."

Kimmich is currently playing at the European Under-21 Championships, and was rated as one of Germany's strongest players in the 3-0 win over Denmark on Friday.

Coach Horst Hrubesch called Kimmich "an intelligent player with good technical skills and agility... he is a winner."

Bayern boss Guardiola named Kimmich as one of his desired players, with Die Roten reportedly paying a transfer fee of around €8 million for Kimmich.

Kimmich was delighted with the move, saying: "Bayern could have bought every No. 6 in the world. It is an honour that they chose me."

But the youngster knows that it will be a tough challenge to adapt to Bayern's level of play, adding: "Bayern is a different world and I will have to get used to that. I have to work hard to stand the pace."
