Bayern Munich say David Alaba to undergo knee surgery

Bayern Munich left-back David Alaba will undergo knee surgery and miss several weeks after suffering an injury during his side's 2-0 win over Roma in the Champions League on Wednesday, the club said.

Alaba suffered a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament and a medial meniscus injury, the club said via statement.

Alaba put in a star performance for Bayern, setting up the opening goal with a pass to Franck Ribery. But he limped off with 10 minutes remaining.

He joins a growing list of injured players. Backup striker Claudio Pizarro has been ruled out for weeks with a torn muscle in his right thigh. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Holger Badstuber, Javi Martinez and Thiago Alcantara are also sidelined.

Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said he was disappointed by the news.

"We lose a top player who can play all positions and always gives 100 percent," Guardiola said.
