Pep Guardiola happy to focus on other competitions as Bayern win group

Pep Guardiola said he's prepared to concentrate on other competitions now that Bayern are assured of the top spot in their Champions League group.

Bayern handled Roma 2-0 on Wednesday to win their fourth straight game in Group E, putting them eight points clear at the top with just two games to play.

The German champions still have group-stage matches against at Manchester City and at home against CSKA Moscow, but Guardiola said he's happy to take this part of the competition on the back burner.

The first legs of the knockout stage are set for February, with the second legs scheduled for March.

"I am very satisfied, congratulations to my team. We are qualified after four matchdays and now we can focus on the German Cup and the Bundesliga until March," Guardiola said.

Bayern were playing Roma for the second straight time in the Champions League, though their Italian opponents put up more of a fight than they did in Matchday 3, when they fell to a 7-1 defeat in Rome.

"I respect Roma -- they have a very good coach and obviously after a 7-1 you play a little more defensively, sometimes with six defenders," Guardiola said. "We had to adapt to this and we were able to control their attack. It was obvious that what happened two weeks ago would not happen again. We did not find our rhythm in the first half, but in the second we did and everything went very well.

"I always want to have possession and so do my players. We want to keep the ball, but this depends a lot on the opponent. Our team is very stable, other sides are not able to create a lot of chances. This is something that makes me proud. But we must not forget that we are just in the beginning of November.

The sole downside to Bayern's win was a late knee ligament injury to David Alaba, who is set to be out through Christmas.

"With David Alaba we lose a great lad and a great player," Guardiola said. "He can play nearly every position on the field. He is very important for us. We just hope he will come back as soon as possible, but I think we will see him just after Christmas."
