Bayern trio set for exit

Three Bayern Munich players could leave during the final month of the summer transfer window, reports in the German media have said.

• Bayern to trim squad

Diego Contento, Emre Can and Luiz Gustavo were not named in the Bayern squad for the Audi Cup win against Sao Paolo on Wednesday, and that has been seen as a sign that Pep Guardiola is willing to sanction their sales.

On Wednesday, Brazil international Gustavo opened the door to a move, telling Abendzeitung: "Until August 31, everything is possible."

The new Bayern system means four players - Spain internationals Javi Martinez and Thiago Alcantara, German Footballer of the Year Bastian Schweinsteiger and Gustavo – are competing for just one defensive midfield role.

Gustavo has been strongly linked with a transfer to Wolfsburg. The two clubs have strong ties through one of their sponsors - Volkswagen owns Wolfsburg and the company’s boss, Martin Winterkorn, is also is a Bayern board member.

Winterkorn was recently quoted as saying: "If a player like him is on the market, you have to be after him."

Fringe players Can and Contento have also been strongly linked with moves away from Sabener Strasse. According to kicker magazine, 19-year-old Can is seeking playing time and has offers from clubs in Germany, England and Turkey to choose from.

He is under contract until 2014 and will need to sign a new deal at Bayern before being allowed to leave on loan.

Meanwhile, left-back Contento, 23, could join Werder Bremen in his quest for first-team action. The 23-year old featured in only eight Bayern games in the 2012-13 season, leading his agent, Ludwig Kogl, to tell kicker: "It is important he gets more on time on the pitch."

In an interview with the German football magazine, Bremen sporting director Thomas Eichin confirmed that his club are looking to replace injured left-back Lukas Schmitz and called Contento "a good player".

Two players who remain firmly in Guardiola’s plans are Mario Mandzukic and Bastian Schweinsteiger, who were praised by their coach following victory over Sao Paolo.

Guardiola described Mandzukic as "a super, super player" before describing Schweinsteiger as "very intelligent" and adding: "Everyone knows his standard - he has a big personality. It was his first start today [after surgery earlier in the summer], and we are pleased with him."
