Bayern will consider January signing

Bayern Munich general director Matthias Sammer has not ruled out taking action in the upcoming transfer window after centre-back Holger Badstuber’s injury limited Bayern’s defensive options.

On Sunday, Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said that Bayern have enough quality to replace Badstuber, who suffered a cruciate ligament tear during the game against Borussia Dortmund.

Rummenigge said Dante, Jerome Boateng, Daniel van Buyten and Javi Martinez were able replacements, and coach Jupp Heynckes has backed that view, stressing that Martinez was signed because of his ability to fill in where required.

With Ukraine international Anatoliy Tymoshchuk and Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo also able to play the centre-back position, Heynckes said that “as things stand” there was no need to take action in the transfer market, particularly as there were few players available that could help the Bundesliga leaders.

However, speaking after Bayern’s 4-1 win over BATE Borisov on Wednesday, Sammer said there was still a possibility of a winter transfer. “We should not categorically rule things out,” he said, adding that the club would have to react “if necessary” but that action would only be taken “after thorough analysis”.

During the Champions League game against BATE, Boateng - Badstuber’s replacement - was sent off after 50 minutes and could miss up to two Champions League matches and Bayern may wait until after the draw for the second round on December 20 before making a decision. With Real Madrid as potential opponents, Bayern would not want to take any gambles.

“Titles are won in the second part of the season,” Sammer added, “and we have to be well placed for that.”
