Rummenigge: We won't replace Badstuber

Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has ruled out buying a replacement for injured centre-back Holger Badstuber in January.

Holger Badstuber has been a star for Bayern this season

Badstuber, 23, could be out for the rest of the season after suffering a cruciate ligament tear during Bayern’s game against Borussia Dortmund at the weekend.

The Germany international will undergo surgery on Monday and faces at least five months on the sidelines.

However, Rummenigge said Bayern had enough quality in their ranks not to need to buy a replacement. “Holger is sorely afflicted,” he said. “He will miss up to five months. That is something which sorely afflicts us as well.

“We don’t think we will react with a transfer. With Dante, [Jerome] Boateng and [Daniel] van Buyten, we have three more players [who can cover for Badstuber] and [Javi] Martinez can also play that position. We are well placed.”

Bayern president Uli Hoeness added: “It’s a severe injury, and we fear that he is. out for the rest of the season. Now Boateng has to prove himself.”

Badstuber - described by Bastian Schweinsteiger as “our best centre-back” - had only just come back from a muscle injury, and has been one of the key components of a Bayern defence that has only conceded six league goals.
