Bayer Leverkusen name Tayfun Korkut as boss until summer

Bayer Leverkusen have appointed Tayfun Korkut as their head coach until the end of the season.

Korkut, 42, succeeds Roger Schmidt, who was sacked following Saturday's 6-2 defeat at Dortmund less than 24 hours after his exit was announced.

Leverkusen confirmed the appointment of former Hannover and Kaiserslautern boss Korkut on Monday, with club executive Michael Schade telling reporters: "We need a new impulse to achieve our goals."

Leverkusen were tipped to be one of the dark horses in the Bundesliga title race this season, but they are currently five points and four spots away from the final Europa League qualification place.

The club have appointed Korkut, who walked out on second-tier Kaiserslautern after less than six months in December, on a contract until the end of the season.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller, also speaking at the news conference, said the recent run of bad results meant the club had to part ways with Schmidt.

"There was only the option to stick with him until the end of the season no matter upcoming developments in the next weeks or part ways immediately," he said. "Not only the pressure was too high, but you also had the feeling that some players no longer showed everything. If you don't reach the players, a club needs to act. The players have no more alibis."

Voller added that the club developed the plan to install Korkut over the last couple of days, and spoke of an "easy decision" because they are convinced of the new head coach's qualities.

"Hopefully we can end the season in a way that reflects Bayer Leverkusen," Korkut said, adding that he is looking forward to working with the highly talented squad.

Leverkusen trail Atletico Madrid 4-2 from the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 clash ahead of next week's return match in Madrid.
