Bayer Leverkusen warn boss Roger Schmidt over touchline bans

Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt has been handed a warning by the club's CEO following his latest touchline ban.

Schmidt, 49, was sent to the stands for the third time in just over two seasons with Leverkusen in the recent 3-0 defeat to Hoffenheim, and he was subsequently banned from the sideline for the DFB Pokal defeat at minnows Lotte and Saturday's 2-1 win at Wolfsburg.

Last week, local tabloid Express reported that Schmidt has come under fire at the club and would be judged upon the results from their league games against Wolfsburg and Darmstadt as well as Wednesday's Champions League fixture at Tottenham, but Leverkusen CEO Michael Schade denied that is the case.

Leverkusen CEO Michael Schade told Bild following the comeback win at Wolfsburg: "There is no discussion about the coach. We'll continue to work with Roger.

"He has made mistakes and damaged us. We don't want to belittle it. I told him that I thought something like that would never happen again."

Earlier this year, Schmidt was sent to the stands in a 1-0 home defeat to Borussia Dortmund, but defied the referee's orders and refused to leave his technical area, resulting in a nine-minute delay of the match.

Schade added: "It's clear that this shouldn't happen to him again."

Schade's words were echoed by the club's sporting director Rudi Voller, who told reporters that Schmidt has been shown the "yellow card."

However, former Germany head coach Voller reiterated that the club have a "long-term concept" with Schmidt and that they are convinced of their coach. He said: "We are convinced we will be successful with him, and I know that we'll have success."

Prior to the season, Leverkusen had said they were seeking to become Germany's second force behind Bayern Munich but they currently rank 10th in Bundesliga, eight points behind second-placed RB Leipzig and 10 behind Bayern.

In the Champions League they have drawn all three group games so far, and on Wednesday visit Wembley for their meeting with Tottenham, who have picked up one more point so far.
