Leverkusen boss Schmidt suspended after 'nutcase' remark vs. Hoffenheim

Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt has been fined €15,000 and banned for two matches after calling Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann a "nutcase" during his side's 3-0 home defeat on Saturday.

Schmidt, 49, was sent to the stands by referee Bastian Dankert for insulting Nagelsmann when, with the score at 2-0, a Hoffenheim player was fouled in front of the technical area.

"Up yours! That was nothing," Schmidt told the 29-year-old Hoffenheim boss. "What sort of nutcase are you? Shut the f--- up."

The Leverkusen coach's comments were clearly audible during the live broadcast of the match.

On Monday, the German FA (DFB) fined Schmidt €15,000 and triggered his suspended two-match sentence, which was handed to him after he defied referee Felix Zwayer's orders in a 1-0 home defeat to Borussia Dortmund in February.

The Leverkusen coach has accepted the verdict and will not be allowed any contact, direct or indirect, with his team beginning 30 minutes before kick-off and ending 30 minutes after the final whistle. Schmidt will also not be allowed into the dressing room or tunnel or onto the pitch.

Schmidt will miss Leverkusen's DFB Pokal match at Sportfreunde Lotte on Tuesday and the league match at Wolfsburg on Saturday.

In February, Schmidt refused to leave his technical area despite being sent off. This prompted referee Zwayer to halt the match until the coach accepted the decison.

Schmidt, who joined Leverkusen from Salzburg in 2014, has been sent to the stands three times during his reign at Bayer, which represents nearly half of the total coach dismissals in the Bundesliga over the last two years.
