Bayer Leverkusen aim to lead Bundesliga - Javier Hernandez

Bayer Leverkusen are looking to finish third or higher this season, Mexico international Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez has said.

The striker was on target as his club beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at the weekend, scoring Leverkusen's second goal. The 28-year-old also played a key role prior to Admir Mehmedi's 10th minute header.

The victory saw Leverkusen leap to sixth in the Bundesliga standings and Hernandez said he feels the club have momentum.

"We've shown against a top team that we can keep the pace," Hernandez said. "If you finished third like we did last season, you want to improve. We at least want to match that result.

"And we also drew 0-0 with Bayern last season. Hopefully we will be one of the best teams in Germany."

Hernandez has now scored 33 goals in only 48 outings for Leverkusen, and already struck five times this season.

However, when asked whether he has set his sights on the Torjagerkanone, the prize for the Bundesliga top scorer, the Mexican remained humble.

"I only know that most people measure attacker in goals. I try to play as good as possible, and the most important thing is to continue winning," he said. "There are no individuals in football, it's a team sport."

During the 90 minutes on Saturday, Hernandez, like the rest of the Leverkusen team, put in an aggressive and focused performance. He also fulfilled a special role by sharing duties with Mehmedi to prevent BVB's holding midfielder, Julian Weigl, from circulating the ball.

"We knew how important he is for the system," Hernandez said of Weigl. "I compare him to Busquets at Barcelona. Dortmund play a very similar system."

Six match days into the Bundesliga season, Leverkusen trail leaders Bayern Munich by six points and second-placed Hertha Berlin by three points.
