Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez out for two weeks with fractured hand

Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez will miss Bayer Leverkusen's first match of the new Bundesliga season and is a major doubt for Mexico's upcoming World Cup qualifiers after fracturing his hand in a fall at home.

Chicharito, 28, provided a crucial goal and one assist in Leverkusen's 2-1 win at minnows SC Hauenstein in their DFB Pokal tie at the weekend. He was set to start at Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday, but is instead now facing two weeks on the sidelines.

The Mexico striker is now also likely to to miss his country's CONCACAF matches in El Salvador on Sept. 3 and at home to Honduras four days later.

"Hernandez sustained a fracture of his right middle hand when he fell down the stairs of his home last night," a Leverkusen statement on their official website read, adding that the attacker underwent successful surgery on Tuesday morning.

"He will not be able to play at Monchengladbach, and is set for at least two weeks on the sidelines," the statement said.

Leverkusen will also have to do without captain Lars Bender, who sustained an ankle injury in Germany's Olympic final against Brazil on Saturday.

The midfielder is also set for at least two weeks on the sidelines, the club said on their homepage.
