Bayer Leverkusen hit by injuries to Da Costa and Baumgartlinger

Bayer Leverkusen could start the Bundesliga season without defender Danny da Costa and midfielder Julian Baumgartlinger.

Da Costa is to undergo an operation on Thursday to remove a metal rod which was used to stabilise his fractured tibia in 2014 and will be sidelined for several weeks.

Austria international Baumgartlinger has been training on his own because of an adductor muscle problem and will not rejoin his teammates until deemed fit enough by the club.

A statement on the club's website said of Da Costa: ''This necessary operation is now made so that the 23-year-old can play the rest of the season without any restrictions.''

And the statement added on Baumgartlinger: ''His re-entry into the team training will happen when he has recovered sufficiently.''
