Rudi Voller extends deal as Bayer Leverkusen sporting director until 2022

Bayer Leverkusen have announced that Rudi Voller will remain the club's sporting director until 2022. The former Germany international has been at the Bundesliga side for over 20 years as player, manager and sporting director.

Voller, 56, had been under contract at the Bay-Arena until 2017, but on Monday extended his contract by another five years.

"We want consistency and continuity in the Bayer leadership," Werner Wenning, head of the Leverkusen board, said on the club's official website, adding that with the long-term deals for CEO Michael Schade, coach Roger Schmidt and now Rudi Voller this is the case.

Schade highlighted that despite interest from other clubs Voller "always committed himself to Bayer."

He added: "He and his staff have made the positive development in recent years possible through a smart transfer policy and outstanding scouting."

Voller said: "With breaks, I have been at Bayer for over 20 years, and feel great at this club and in this role. We have achieved a lot in those years."

The 1990 World Cup winner with Germany has been at the club since joining from Marseille as a 34-year-old in 1994. After his retirement from professional football, he became the club's sporting director until 2000, when he took the job as coach of the Germany national team for four years.

Following a brief spell as the coach of Roma in 2004, he returned to his old job at Leverkusen in January 2005.

Although Voller has yet to win a major trophy with Leverkusen, the Bundesliga side have established themselves as a regular qualifier for the Champions League in recent years.

Leverkusen finished the last Bundesliga season in third behind Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
