Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez delighted to break Bayer Leverkusen duck

Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez said he was "happy" after scoring his first goal for Bayer Leverkusen in the 4-1 Champions League win over BATE Borisov on Wednesday.

Leverkusen had gone into the game on the back of two Bundesliga defeats including a shock 1-0 loss to Darmstadt.

That prompted coach Roger Schmidt to start recent signings Kevin Kampl and Hernandez, who joined from Manchester United on the final day of the German transfer period.

Both Slovenia international Kampl and Mexico star Hernandez justified their inclusions and linked up for the 59th minute goal that made it 3-1.

"I am just happy," Hernandez, 27, told reporters after the match.

That sentiment was echoed by coach Schmidt, who said on Sky: "That's football -- it writes beautiful stories.

"You can see that Chicharito enjoys being and playing here. He had a couple of good chances, and put one away. That's why we signed him.

"He's a very open-minded person. That makes integration easier."

Hernandez said there is more to come.

"I'm obviously very pleased," the 27-year-old told UEFA.com. "To win 4-1 in a Champions League match is always a good result. Of course I'm happy with my goal, but first and foremost I'm pleased with the victory. The goal gives me confidence and I'm going to keep working as hard as I can to score more and help the team. I'm still very hungry."

Hernandez said he is working to adjust quickly to life to at Leverkusen.

"It's in my mind to do my best, to try and do what the coach tells me to do on the pitch, and get used to the way of playing and my teammates," he said. "I'm trying my best on and off the pitch to get results, and this is a very important result for us to start the Champions League."
