Bayer Leverkusen director Rudi Voller backs manager Roger Schmidt

Bayer Leverkusen's director of sport Rudi Voller has given his full backing to coach Roger Schmidt despite having only won one game since the turn of the year.

On Sunday, Leverkusen were denied victory in the last minute at Augsburg when the hosts' goalkeeper Marwin Hitz netted a dramatic goal.

That result meant Augsburg remained two points above the Werkself in the standings, jeopardising their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season, but Voller remains convinced that Schmidt is the right man to bring success to the club.

"We have total faith in the squad and also in the coach," Voller told Sky television. "There are reasons why we appointed Schmidt, and that's because we have a concept to reach our goals and play attractive football with this coach."

Leverkusen have earned plenty of compliments for their attacking brand of football this season, but they are currently not delivering the desired results.

Should the season end now, however, Schmidt would still have fulfilled his mission.

"Our minimum aim is to qualify for the Europa League," Voller said. "Our ideal aim is to qualify for the Champions League.

"Of course I am concerned that we won't make it because we are dropping too many points and we've been drawing too many games."
