Hyypia hopeful of upset against PSG

Following home defeats in both Bundesliga and the German cup in the last week -- and five defeats in their last seven games -- Bayer Leverkusen hope to end their mini-crisis against PSG at the BayArena on Tuesday.

A testing season waits for Sami Hyypia at Bayer Leverkusen.
Sami Hyypia is concerned about Ibra.

“We need to go to our mental and physical limits and that is the only thing we have to focus on,” Bayer Leverkusen coach Sami Hyypia told a news conference on Monday night.

Despite Leverkusen’s 2-1 defeat against domestic rivals Schalke, Hyypia believes that a similar performance, and a bit more luck, will leave his side with a shot of causing an upset against Paris with Bosnia captain Emir Sphaic, who was a doubt after suffering from thigh cramps on Saturday, back in training on Monday.

“If we play like we did against Schalke, we also stand a chance against Paris,” Hyypia warned. “We, of course, must play more effectively, because otherwise we’ll be empty handed again. We must go to our limits and give it 100 percent in all areas.”

The former Liverpool captain hopes to stop Paris superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic with a team effort, but is wary of the Sweden striker’s talent.

“Ibrahimovic can score goals out of nowhere,” Hyypia said. “”Even if you play a perfect game against him, he is always capable of scoring a goal.”

Leverkusen captain Simon Rolfes added: “We all know that we are only outsiders. But that won’t change that we will fight and dynamically attack.”
