Jurgen Klopp: Christian Benteke 'a perfect change' for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp credited the impact of substitute Christian Benteke after his 96th-minute penalty gave Liverpool a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.

With his side trailing 1-0 in Sunday's Premier League encounter and having had James Milner sent off in the 62nd minute, Klopp sent on Benteke in place of Divock Origi and was pleased when the much-criticised striker won and scored the decisive spot-kick.

It came from an innocuous challenge by Damien Delaney after Joe Ledley's 48th-minute goal gave Palace the lead at Selhurst Park and Roberto Firmino levelled on 72 minutes following an error from goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. Klopp, however, was in no doubt.

The Liverpool manager told BBC Sport: "It was a perfect change, [Benteke] really worked hard. His first touch was a big chance and then it was his penalty.

"He made the move and forced the situation. It was a clear penalty and then he was pretty cool with the penalty."

Klopp was pleased with his side's patience and adaptability as they made it three league victories on the bounce while also securing their first league win at Selhurst Park since 1997.

"If you are behind it's not so important why and how -- the only thing is that the difference is not so big," he added.

"We had to change the system and had to try to stay offensive. We knew it was risky but at the end we forced it and for us it is a great win.

"Football is a lot of things and sometimes it's all about passion. What I saw today from my players, they defended with all they had and that's good to see."

Of the equaliser by Firmino, Klopp said: "Sometimes you need a bit of luck. We forced it in a way because we were high in our formation. We were there, cool enough and scored the goal."
