Spurs duo Dele Alli and Harry Kane can shine for England - Glenn Hoddle

Tottenham duo Dele Alli and Harry Kane are pushing hard for a starting role for England in Euro 2016, according to former manager Glenn Hoddle.

Kane has scored 13 times in Premier League so far this season to back up the 31 goals he fired in all competitions last season, while Alli's sparking form in his debut season in the top flight has edged him ahead of a pack of players looking to fill the role behind the lead striker.

Indeed, with England playing with only one central striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Hoddle insists that a starting role for captain Wayne Rooney is not assured with the competition for places tight.

"I like the idea of Rooney playing in the hole behind Kane and that's a role which would suit him at this stage of his career, but Alli is pushing hard to claim that position for himself at the moment," BT Sport pundit Hoddle told ESPN FC.

"Kane is a player you would like to see in the England side from this point forward and the understanding he has with Alli at club level has to be good for the national team.

"That deeper attacking berth is a position that is up for grabs in the England team, with Ross Barkey and Adam Lallana being used in there at times and Rooney has to be in the mix for the role as well.

"Alli is only a kid and it would be a bit of a gamble to stick him in there as a starter at the Euros next summer, but he has been one of the stars of the Premier League season and has emerged as a wonderful option for Roy to have.

"As I know from experience as England manager, you don't always get the chance to pick the team you want in a major tournament and certain opposition demands different selections, so having players like Kane, Alli, Barkley and Rooney all in the mix to fill the two attacking roles in the team is a great position to be in."

Alli has netted six goals in 21 games since his move from MK Dons to Tottenham last summer and his style has been compared to Spurs legend Hoddle, but such tags will not help the 19-year-old who scored a sparkling goal on his senior England debut against France last November.

"There is always a lot of hype around young players who catch the eye and that is especially the case when they are English," Hoddle added. "Comparisons to myself are not something I want to get into and it would not help him to be compared to anyone.

"He should be viewed as a great young talent in his own right and I'm not too surprised to see how well he is doing this season because I saw him at MK Dons last season and he always looked so calm on the ball, so comfortable in his surroundings.

"It is a big step up to the Premier League from where he was playing in League One last season, but the lad has handled it so well and he looks to be the kind of player who can do the things most players don't dream about. He does things differently, offers you that unpredictability and players like that can be so valuable.

"He will have to overcome injuries, dips in form and he will be tested. At the moment, he has had a nice run from MK Dons to Spurs without anything going wrong, but you cannot go through a career like that.

"I hope the lad is given a chance to develop at a natural pace and not put under too much pressure by the media because he is a talent that need to be given time to build his career from this point."
