Chelsea, Manchester United, Barcelona players highlight Golden Boy shortlist

Chelsea, Manchester United and Barcelona players dominated the list of nominees for the European Golden Boy award, which released its 40-player shortlist on Friday.

The Golden Boy award, won by Raheem Sterling last year, is given to Europe's best player under the age of 21.

Nathan Ake (loaned to Watford), Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mario Pasalic (loaned to Monaco) made up the Chelsea contingent. Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw and Adnan Januzaj (loaned to Borussia Dortmund) represent United, while Munir El Haddadi, Alen Halilovic and Sandro Ramirez were Barca's inclusions on the list.

The award has previously been won by the likes of Wayne Rooney (2004), Lionel Messi (2005) and Sergio Aguero (2007), as well as Mario Balotelli (2010), and is voted on by a panel of 30 journalists from around the world.

The final results will be announced in December.
