Sergio Aguero the only Premier League star good enough for Europe - Scholes

In a damning indictment of England's top clubs, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says that Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is the only Premier League player good enough to be a starter for Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

Scholes added that England's top flight was no longer the place where the game's best players went and even Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus were now ahead of England's elite.

"If you look at the quality of player that comes to England I don't think we have the best players in Europe or in the world," Scholes said on BT Sport.

"The best players are at Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. I think the level below that is probably Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus. And under that is where the quality of English clubs come into it."

A one club man, Scholes retired in 2013 after winning 11 Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns with Manchester United, making 718 appearances in all competitions. Since then, his former club have struggled to replicate their previous success, although they do find themselves top of the 2015-16 Premier League table under Louis van Gaal.

However, the Red Devils have got there almost by default, with reigning champions Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal dropping unexpected points.

"When you think about the quality of players we have, do you think any of the players at our top clubs now would get in the Barcelona team? I very much doubt it," Scholes said.

"They wouldn't get in the Real Madrid team or the Bayern Munich team. Maybe Sergio Aguero is the exception."
