Steve McClaren: Newcastle have to stick together to turn things around

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren denied there was a "crisis" at St James' Park after his side were beaten 2-1 at home by Watford.

Although the Magpies climbed off the bottom of the Premier League table on goal difference thanks to Sunderland's defeat at Bournemouth, they were booed off at half and full-time after another poor performance.

Watford were two up by half-time thanks to a brace of goals from Odio Ighalo.

Defender Daryl Janmaat pulled one back, but Newcastle were unable to fashion an equaliser and McClaren said: "I can understand the fans' reaction.

"We are just turning things around and I think the majority understand that. Like we have said to the boys in the dressing room, it's not a crisis, it's not a time to panic -- it's too early, and we'd never do that anyway.

"No matter where you are at what stage, we'd never do that, we have too much experience.

"Like I've said to the players, we have got to stick together. We are going to get a lot of criticism and that can be flying from not just media, but also fans, and in that dressing room we have got to stay tight, we have got to stay calm, we have got to stick together.

"I am under no illusions, this is a hard job -- everybody knew that and you know it. You want proof, we've got proof."

He said he and his staff had the experience to "deal with this and turn it around," adding: "We are lucky that it's early -- it's only two and a half months that we've been working with each other and there's a long way to go and a lot of things to do.''

Watford counterpart Quique Sanchez Flores was delighted with the performance of Nigeria international Ighalo and said: "He took a decision two months ago to stay at Watford -- he had offers from other teams.

"He decided to stay here with us, so it's clever because he saw something in the football that is good for him.

"He is a very important player, but I like to talk about the full squad because they are fighting like heroes every single week, they are playing really, really well.

"It was nice for Ighalo, but it was a very good performance from the whole squad.

"I think we deserved the result. We respect Newcastle -- they tried to play well, strong and tried to give their best, but I am really happy with the performance."
