Philippe Coutinho Brazil snub baffles Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says he cannot understand why Philippe Coutinho has been dropped from the Brazil squad.

National team coach Dunga has omitted the forward from his 24-man party to face Costa Rica and the United States in friendlies in September.

That is despite the fact that Coutinho started the Premier League season with a spectacular winner as Liverpool beat Stoke 1-0 on Aug. 9.

The 23-year-old will seek to continue that form when the Reds host promoted Bournemouth in the Premier League on Monday.

But Rodgers says it is "incredible" that Coutinho has lost his national team place to veteran striker Kaka, who plays in Major League Soccer for Orlando City.

Rodgers told British newspapers: "It seemed from last season that he was going to be one of the flagship players for the new dawn of Brazilian football.

"It's hard to understand, to be honest. He's a young player who made the team of the season in the most competitive league in the world. How he cannot be in the squad is incredible, really.

"I've spoke to him at length on it and of course he's disappointed. But straight away, his focus was on Liverpool. That was his thought: to continue to work.

"He's a really humble boy and a he's really proud man for his country. So I'm sure he'll pick up the form that he's shown here in the last 18 months and I'm sure it won't be long before he'll be back in the squad."
