Sunderland have appointed former Netherlands coach Dick Advocaat as manager on a short-term deal until the end of the season. (1:19)

Sunderland's players can expect a tough brand of leadership from new manager Dick Advocaat similar to that of Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal, according to a player who worked under both Dutchmen during his career.

Advocaat was installed at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday for the remainder of the season following the sacking of Gus Poyet.

The 67-year-old has nine games left to stop Sunderland slipping into the Premier League's relegation places, with the club currently just one point and one place above the bottom three.

Former Netherlands full-back Arthur Numan, who won two SPL titles under Advocaat at Rangers and played for the national team during Van Gaal's short tenure, believes that the two men have similar traits.

"Dick will demand a good work ethic," Numan said in The Sun. "Not only in games but he will expect the same attitude and mentality every training session.

"If he thinks you are not giving 100 percent in training he will let you know, don't worry about that. He is so involved in training sometimes you think he is playing himself!

"You will hear him shouting. He will not sit quietly. You will see him storming out of the dugout. He is a little bit like Van Gaal sometimes. They will do anything to get a result."

Numan added that Advocaat -- who spent four years as Rangers boss before leaving to replace Van Gaal in charge of Netherlands in 2002 -- had always had an ambition to manage south of the border from Ibrox, and he is aiming to continue his stay on Wearside past the summer should he keep the club up in the top flight.

"It has always been Dick's dream to manage in England," he said. "He will want to prove himself again.

"I am 100 percent sure that if Sunderland stay up he will extend his contract -- I will put my money on that."
