Steven Naismith happy with his Everton progress, team needs work

Steven Naismith feels 2014-15 is proving his best season with Everton on an individual level, although he admits he is far from happy about the club's current predicament in the Premier League.

The forward is getting plenty of playing time for the Toffees this term with 20 league starts, seven more than his total of 13 from each of the previous two seasons following his arrival from Rangers in 2012.

Emerging as an established key figure, the 28-year-old has started 26 games in all competitions for the Merseysiders this season to date and scored seven goals, contributing along the way to a Europa League run that saw Everton reach the last-16 on Thursday night.

But while thriving in continental action, the club have struggled domestically. Fifth at the end of 2013-14, Everton are currently 12th in the Premier League and head to Arsenal on Sunday with only two wins from their previous 14 top-flight fixtures.

Scotland international Naismith says he's definitely having one of his best seasons yet for Everton.

"It is one I have enjoyed. I've played in more games than I have in any other season here," said Naismith. "I probably feel much more confident and comfortable in the roles that I'm playing in, which helps me. Personally I'm happy.

"But it's a team game and I'm not happy with where we are in the league.

"I think our biggest problem this season has been individual mistakes. It's not that we are a bad team, we have played well in parts, but we have just shot ourselves in the foot at bad times in games. But we have still got time to rectify that.''

If Everton are going to rectify things away from Europe, it seems their 28million-pound, club-record signing and top scorer Romelu Lukaku is likely to play a crucial role.

The striker took his tally for the season to 15 goals and eight in his last 10 games with a brace in Thursday's Europa League last-32 second-leg win over Young Boys. It was the 21-year-old Belgium international's fourth and fifth goals of the tie.

Everton have not had a player reach the 20-goal mark in a season since Yakubu did so in 2007-08, and Naismith has no doubt Lukaku will manage it this term.

"I'm sure that is the target for him and I'm confident he will do it,'' Naismith said.

"He maybe didn't start the season so well but that is probably because he had been away at the World Cup, and never really had a great pre-season. But he has grown into the season and scored some big goals.''

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez has recently stressed he has been particularly pleased with the number of goalscoring chances Lukaku is finding, even if they have not all been converted.

And Naismith added: "As a forward playing there myself, you would be worried if you're not getting the chances, that's the big thing.

"He (Lukaku) is still going in there, still asking for the ball and he is not shying away from it.

"Another thing is a lot of people forget his age, how young he is. Guys like Ross (Barkley) and Stonesy (John Stones) are of similar age but they probably get looked at as youngsters, whereas Rom probably doesn't as much.''
