Spurs hammer Chelsea, City win, Saints beat Arsenal, Liverpool held

Manchester City won and took advantage of a loss by Chelsea to move level with the Blues atop the Premier League table on Thursday.

The co-leaders are level on 46 points through 20 games and also have an identical 25-point goal difference and 44 goals scored.

Chelsea were beaten 5-3 in a thriller by Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Diego Costa opened the scoring, but Harry Kane fired an equaliser. Danny Rose then bundled the ball home before Kane won a penalty just before half-time that was converted by Andros Townsend.

Kane netted again after the break to make it 4-1, then Eden Hazard hit back. Nacer Chadli made it 5-2 but then John Terry netted the final goal of an incredible game to end 5-3.

Chelsea are now exactly level on everything with City at the top of the table. They are only top alphabetically now and, if the league stopped today, they would have to go to a neutral venue and play a play-off for the title.

Manchester City edged Sunderland 3-2 after a thrilling second half as they returned to winning ways following Sunday's draw with Burnley.

The Premier League champions looked sluggish in the first half and showed little sign of improvement in the second until Yaya Toure produced a moment of magic on 57 minutes, smashing a long-range strike into the top corner.

Stevan Jovetic then doubled their advantage with a clever finish from Gael Clichy's cross, but within two minutes Sunderland were back in it as Jack Rodwell scored against his former club.

Adam Johnson then scored an equaliser from the penalty spot after a Pablo Zabaleta foul on Billy Jones to make it 2-2 on 71 minutes, sparking memories of their collapse in the draw with Burnley.

However, Frank Lampard then provided an instant reply, heading home to restore his side's advantage the day after it was announced he would be extending his loan spell at the club.

Southampton moved three points clear of Arsenal in the race for the top four after a comfortable 2-0 win over the Gunners at St Mary's.

Saints, beaten 1-0 at the Emirates on Dec. 3, took the lead on 34 minutes through Sadio Mane, who followed his fine goal against Chelsea on Sunday by lobbing Wojciech Szczesny from a tight angle.

Dusan Tadic then increased their lead on 53 minutes after Arsenal failed to deal with a low cross into the box, and it could have been 3-0 soon afterwards when Graziano Pelle hit the woodwork.

There was an unsavoury incident late in the match as Arsene Wenger was confronted by a supporter, who had to be led away by security.

Liverpool threw away a two-goal lead as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to rock-bottom Leicester City.

The Foxes had threatened early on as Riyad Mahrez struck the woodwork after just two minutes, but the Reds were awarded a spot-kick when Wes Morgan was controversially adjudged to have blocked a Raheem Sterling cross with his hands, and Steven Gerrard made no mistake.

Danny Simpson was then penalised for a handball in the area on 39 minutes, and Gerrard again converted as Liverpool looked on course to claim a third successive victory.

Leicester battled back with two quickfire goals, though, as David Nugent scored a wonderful volley on 58 minutes before Jeffrey Schlupp drove home a second on the hour.

Manchester United claimed a hard-fought point in a 1-1 draw at Stoke City.

Stoke went ahead within two minutes as Peter Crouch was left free to head a corner in the direction of Ryan Shawcross, who directed the ball past David de Gea, but United were level before the break as Radamel Falcao found space to divert home a corner following a flick-on.

Stoke had chances to restore their advantage in the second half, with United fortunate to escape punishment when Chris Smalling appeared to handle the ball in the area, while Crouch also headed against the woodwork, but the match finished level.

Everton sustained a fourth straight Premier League defeat as relegation battlers Hull City claimed only their second win since Oct. 4 in a 2-0 victory.

Ahmed Elmohamady opened the scoring on 33 minutes when he headed home Liam Rosenior's cross, and former Everton striker Nikica Jelavic doubled Hull's advantage just before the break.

Antolin Alcaraz then picked up a second yellow card on 86 minutes to round off a miserable day for the Toffees.

West Bromwich Albion claimed a point against high-flying West Ham United in a 1-1 draw in their first match since the dismissal of Alan Irvine.

Diafra Sakho headed the Hammers into the lead on 10 minutes, but Saido Berahino ended his goal drought to secure a point for the Baggies, who announced the appointment of Tony Pulis earlier on New Year's Day.

John Carver's stint as Newcastle United caretaker manager began with a thrilling game in which they led Burnley three times but had to settle for a 3-3 draw.

Local boys Steven Taylor and Jack Colback put the Magpies ahead but Paul Dummett's shambolic own goal and Danny Ings' strike had Burnley level on each occasion.

Moussa Sissoko restored the Magpies' advantage but George Boyd's low angled drive made it 3-3.

Wilfried Bony came off the bench to score a dramatic injury-time equaliser and ensure Swansea took a share of the spoils at Queens Park Rangers in a 1-1 draw.

A stunning first-half strike from Leroy Fer looked to have sealed another valuable three points for QPR at home but Bony scored his ninth goal of the season two minutes into injury time to salvage a hard-earned point for the visitors.

QPR were lucky not to be reduced to 10 men early on when Rob Green handled outside the area but it was Swansea who finished with a man less after Wayne Routledge was sent off with four minutes to play.

Aston Villa and Crystal Palace fought out a bore 0-0 draw in front of the watching Alan Pardew.

The 53-year-old is expected to become the new Palace boss after the Eagles agreed compensation with Newcastle for their former midfielder, and he watched from the stands as Yannick Bolasie wasted the visitors' best chance when he hit the bar with just Brad Guzan to beat.
