Jerry Jones would not follow Tom Hicks into Premier League, report says

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he has no interest in following his close friend Tom Hicks into Premier League ownership, especially after Hicks' disastrous experience as a co-owner at Liverpool, according to a report.

"Tom is a good friend and was a pretty easy target. An American going over there, the same situation the Glazers had, that attracts some criticism," Jones said, according to the Mirror.

"In college I played for the University of Arkansas and the only competition we had were all Texas teams, and certainly there was a bit of intensity when I bought the Cowboys from all of our Texas base being from Arkansas. I think Tom had some of that."

The Cowboys are in London for a Nov. 9 game vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hicks, who also held majority shares in Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers and the NHL's Dallas Stars, bought Liverpool for 220 million pounds ($432.9 million) with partner George Gillett in 2007. The pair were obligated to sell in 2010 and Hicks has since lost control of his other franchises.

Jones said he could never diversify as Hicks did.

"I think the world of him, but the dynamics that were involved there, involved in three different sports at the same time, wouldn't fit me. I would have to delegate a lot more, and that's not my style," Jones said.

"The way I run the Cowboys, which is a complete involvement, doesn't suit my interests being in another sport. I have such a focus on this game and I am sure many of our fans would say 'he doesn't know how to do one sport let alone two.'"

Jones said that running the Cowboys while meeting the NFL's strict salary cap and revenue sharing rules sometimes makes him wish he was an owner in another brand of football.

"There are times when I would love to say to everyone 'let's throw away the rule book for a year, let's put a bunch of money in the centre of the table and let's just see who wins it and takes all the money,'" Jones said.

"The NFL is healthier for having those rules. I think that you have to look at the structure of our league and see how competitive it has made all teams. It does give a team that is in a marginal market relatively to a team in the New York market, it gives them opportunity to win and to sustain winning.

"I think this model of having the competition we have is a good one and there are some things about it which I think are better for fans than the structure soccer has."
