Man arrested after drone flown during Manchester City-Tottenham match

A 41-year-old man from Nottingham was arrested and has been bailed for eight weeks pending further enquiries in connection with a drone that was flown over Manchester City's Etihad Stadium, according to reports.

Police said they received reports that a remote-controlled aircraft was flying over the East Stand of the ground during City's 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Police said a man was controlling the device in the car park of the Asda supermarket opposite the stadium.

Chief Inspector Chris Hill of Greater Manchester Police, told The Manchester Evening News: "The drones could pose a threat to crowd safety and potentially cause alarm in crowded areas.

"Even small drones can weigh up to seven or eight kilograms and could cause damage or injury if they fall from height. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

"People may see this as a minor offence but it is a breach of the Air Navigation Order which is prosecuted by the civil aviation authority."

Last week, a European Championship qualifier between Serbia and Albania was abandoned after a drone with an Albanian nationalist banner was flown over a stadium in Belgrade, igniting a brawl on the pitch and fueling simmering political tensions between Balkan rivals Serbia and Albania.
