The North London club confirmed the deal on Twitter after fighting off reported interest from Fiorentina and Swansea City.

Stambouli, 24, progressed through the ranks at Montpellier and played a key role during their Ligue 1 title-winning campaign in 2012.

Spurs head coach Mauricio Pochettino has been in the market for a new midfielder and had identified Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin as a priority target, though Tottenham could not agree a fee with Ronald Koeman's side.

Tottenham have also announced that German midfielder Lewis Holtby has left White Hart Lane to join Hamburg on a season-long loan, with view to a permanent transfer, while Brazilian powerhouse Sandro is poised to reunite with former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers.
