United -- beaten by Swansea at Old Trafford last weekend -- started the match slowly but found themselves ahead through a Juan Mata tap-in on 17 minutes.

However, Sunderland hit back soon afterwards through a Jack Rodwell header, and United struggled to carve out opportunities during the remainder of the game.

Tottenham Hotspur moved to the top of the Premier League after thrashing Queens Park Rangers 4-0 at White Hart Lane.

Nacer Chadli scored two goals either side of an Eric Dier header, and Emmanuel Adebayor sidefooted home a fourth in the 65th minute to complete the rout.

The victory sees Spurs overtake Chelsea at the top of the table by virtue of their goal difference.

Hull City claimed a 1-1 draw at home to Stoke City despite seeing James Chester sent off after 14 minutes.
