The 31-year-old dislocated his shoulder in the Champions League semifinal first leg against Atletico Madrid and had been widely expected to miss the rest of the campaign, despite appearing for a training session ahead of the second leg with the Spanish side.

The club have now confirmed that the Czech international will miss the next eight to 10 weeks, meaning Mark Schwarzer will continue in goal for the final match of the season against Cardiff on Sunday.

A club statement on Wednesday read: "Petr Cech successfully underwent surgery today following his shoulder dislocation in the Champions League semifinal first leg against Atletico Madrid. He will be out for approximately eight to 10 weeks."

It is not yet clear whether Cech will be Chelsea's No. 1 next season, with Thibaut Courtois -- who has excelled on loan at Atletico over the last three years -- yet to confirm whether he will return to play for his parent club in the 2014-15 campaign.

The Belgian played a major role in the Blues' Champions League exit against Atletico but could remain with Diego Simeone's side, while recent reports in Spanish newspapers including El Mundo Deportivo have suggested Barcelona as a potential destination.
