Lythell: Blues lack guile

While all three players have been rumoured to leave the Blues over the summer, Terry and Lampard are likely to stay. Not so for Cole, who at 33, started only 14 matches in the Premier League this season, losing his starting role to Cesar Azpilicueta.

Jose Mourinho ignored Cole for large parts of the campaign, but the left-back has started the past four matches, including the Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid.

Cole, Lampard and Terry saluted the Matthew Harding stand after Sunday's match against Norwich, but Mourinho said he thought all three Chelsea veterans will return next season.

"Again, they are with the club on their future," Mourinho said. "I think they will play here [for Chelsea] again. I think so.

"But now it's time to wait a little. The summer is a long summer for us. For you, the media, with the World Cup, it's a different story. For the players involved in the World Cup it's a different story. But for us, as a club, it's a long time to be calm and to sit and to discuss and to analyse options and the market and possibilities. It's a long summer for us."

Cole has played for Chelsea for eight seasons.
