Townsend faces wait over ankle injury

Tottenham winger Andros Townsend is undergoing further assessment of the ankle injury that could leave his hopes of a place in England's World Cup squad in the balance.

Townsend, 22, suffered the injury as Spurs won 1-0 at Stoke on Saturday.

He sparkled for England in October, scoring on his debut against Montenegro and then enjoying another fine game against Poland as Roy Hodgson's side secured a place in Brazil.

However, Townsend's form has since tailed off and he last started a Premier League match for Spurs against Arsenal last month.

He has made 33 appearances in total this season after impressing during a loan spell with QPR last season.
