Three fits for Manchester United

Manchester United has officially put an end to the unpleasant David Moyes era. The indignities for the esteemed club are stacked high: The club is now assured to finish with fewer than 70 points for the first time since the 1990-91 season; the 2-0 loss to Everton over the weekend confirmed that United will not play in the Champions League next season; and with just four games remaining, there is only a slim mathematical hope of the club even earning a place in the 2014-15 Europa League competition.

This officially puts United in rebuilding mode, and such a transition requires a careful choice in leadership. The team is currently in desperate need of help along the back line, as Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra are all expected to either move on or accept diminished roles next season. There are also issues with depth in the attack, as United’s direct style under Moyes translated to almost 20 percent fewer chances created this season, and the team is on pace to score 30 percent fewer goals than it did under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012-13.

The scope of financial resources available for United’s rebuild is not entirely clear, but here is a breakdown of three potential managerial replacements for Moyes who could help the team given its current state of affairs.
