Fletcher: We're fighting for our futures

Darren Fletcher has warned that the Manchester United squad are playing for their futures at the club.

United manager David Moyes has a large transfer budget and has spent the last few months scouting potential new signings as he plots a major overhaul of his playing staff after a season of underachievement.

And Fletcher, 30, has told his teammates that while the Red Devils' campaign may be effectively over after their Champions League exit to Bayern Munich, their next five games may dictate if they are still at Old Trafford for the next campaign.

"The boys have got to play well to stay in the manager's thoughts for next season," Fletcher said after Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to Bayern.

United are enduring their worst season in a quarter of a century and are only seventh in the Premier League, seven points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.

And while many of their players have won plenty of trophies in the past, Fletcher believes they have much to prove to Moyes over the next few weeks to ensure they are not heading for the exit in the summer.

He added: "There is talk of a lot of changes so if you get an opportunity to play you have to go out there and perform and to show the manager that you want to be at United, that you are capable of being at United and you are good enough.

"A lot of people will say there isn't a lot to play for now, but there is. You are playing for personal pride and to be in the squad for next season."
