Samir Nasri issues Wembley warning

Samir Nasri has drawn upon his experience of Wembley heartbreak to warn Manchester City that losing Sunday’s Capital One Cup final could harm their title challenge.

Curtis: City on the march in March

Nasri, 26, is likely to line up against Sunderland on March 2 as City look to win their first trophy under Manuel Pellegrini.

But the France international, a runner-up in the FA Cup with City in 2012 and in the League Cup with Arsenal the previous season, has first-hand knowledge of the damage defeat can do.

“I have the experience of losing the Carling Cup with Arsenal [against Birmingham in 2011],” he said. “After that we only won one game in the league, so a win would be really important for us and the confidence.”

The midfielder’s only success at Wembley came in the colours of France as they saw off England in a friendly in 2010.

“I don't have good memories with clubs,” Nasri said. “I lost the final with Arsenal and with Manchester City but I won there with the national team against England. I hope it is going to be the same kind of game.”

Nasri is also hopeful that the club’s top scorer Sergio Aguero, who is due to resume full training on Tuesday, will be fit to take on Sunderland.

City have only scored three goals in the five games the Argentina international has missed, and Nasri is looking forward to his return to give Pellegrini four forwards to choose from -- along with Alvaro Negredo, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic.

“It is going to be a big boost for the team, but you cannot disrespect Alvaro and Edin,” he said. “They did a great job too. It will be good when another striker comes, and with Stevan and them we can rotate and be more fresh.”
