Gary Cahill suffers injury blow

Chelsea are sweating on the fitness of defender Gary Cahill after he sustained a calf injury during the 1-1 draw at West Brom on Tuesday.

Cahill, 28, completed the full 90 minutes at The Hawthorns, but was reportedly in agony as he hobbled onto the Blues coach after the game.

The England international, who has started 19 of Chelsea’s last 22 matches, is a major doubt for the FA Cup fifth-round tie at Manchester City on Saturday, while he could also be out of the Premier League clash with Everton and the Champions League last-16 first leg against Galatasaray this month.

“Once I got the knock, I was struggling from then on,” Cahill told the Evening Standard. “It happened when a West Brom player went for a header and I was on the floor. He landed just inside my knee and calf. It is sore and we’ll see what it’s like today.”

The draw at West Brom means Chelsea could relinquish top spot in the Premier League to Arsenal if the Gunners beat Manchester United on Wednesday.

And Cahill concedes the result was frustrating for the Blues, especially after recording impressive wins over City and Newcastle last week.

“We had a great week last week, so there is frustration we couldn’t get three points,” he added. “I’m sure there will be more twists and turns in the title race.”
