Nasri Snr accuses Yanga-Mbiwa

Samir Nasri's father has accused Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa of deliberately trying to injure his son after the Manchester City midfielder was stretchered off during his club's 2-0 win at Newcastle United on Sunday.

Mooney: Backlash costs City

City are awaiting news on Nasri after the 26-year-old crumpled to the turf at St. James' Park 15 minutes from time when Yanga-Mbiwa, having seen his fellow France international skip beyond him, scythed down the City man, who was then stretchered off.

Though Yanga-Mbiwa was only given a yellow card for the offence, City boss Manuel Pellegrini felt the former Montpellier men should have been sent off after leaving Nasri with what he described as "a serious knee injury."

Nasri's father, Abdelhamid, told Le Parisien that Yanga-Mbiwa -- who, like teammates Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa, went to see Nasri after the final whistle -- had carried out a senseless assault on his son.

He said: "David Ginola, who was commentating on the game, also went to see Samir. He regretted what Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa had done, and told Samir: 'It's not good what he did to you. He was beaten, he kicked you hard to hurt you.'

"I have that feeling too. He did it nastily, the boy was beaten first time and did it with the second challenge. And it wasn't to try and get the ball back where he hit... It's just gratuitous nastiness."

"It's so disappointing. If you don't want to let him get past, you pull his shirt, you hold your opponent back, but you don't attack his legs, they're a player's worktools. I hope we'll be able to banish such tackles from stadia."

Initial fears Nasri may have sustained a cruciate ligament injury, which would have ended his World Cup hopes, have dissipated, and though a scan on Monday will determine the exact nature of the problem, Nasri snr stated his son is optimistic he has merely suffered a severe twist of the left knee.

"I've spoken to Samir on the phone. The disappointment has subsided a little -- I tried to keep it inside, and he did as well. Samir will have an MRI on Monday. We'll then have a precise diagnosis. He's afraid of a long-term injury which will end his season and his dreams of the World Cup," he said.

"But after taking a step back to think about it, and with certain signs, he thinks it might just be a severe twist. If the meniscus is damaged, he'll be out two months, which isn't enormous. In that case, it could have been much worse and he'll even be able to take a breather and recharge his batteries. He's trying to keep things in perspective."
