FA charges David Moyes

Manchester United manager David Moyes has been charged by the Football Association for comments he made after his side’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sunderland in the Capital One Cup semifinal first leg on Tuesday.

Moyes hit out at referee Andre Marriner following his decision to award a free kick against Jonny Evans which led to Ryan Giggs’ own goal, while the Scot was also aggrieved at the awarding of a Black Cats penalty, which Fabio Borini then converted.

"I feel we are having to play the opposition and the officials," Moyes said. "They gave a free kick on the first goal that I couldn't believe. Maybe I have got to understand that's what happens at Manchester United -- they are certainly not giving us much at this moment in time.

"For the penalty the linesman gives it, but he can't see through Patrice Evra. The referee is looking right at it and is in a very good position -- not too close, not too far away, but he turns around. The linesman gives it.”

The FA announced on Wednesday that it would be looking into Moyes' comments, before confirming via a statement on its official website on Friday that the former Everton boss has been charged.

The statement read: "Manchester United manager David Moyes has been charged for misconduct by the FA in relation to post-match media comments he made following his side’s game against Sunderland on Tuesday Jan. 7, 2014.

“It is alleged the comments called into question the integrity of the match officials appointed to that fixture and/or appointed to Manchester United fixtures generally, and/or implied that such match officials are motivated by bias; and/or brought the game into disrepute, in contravention of Rule E3(1).

“Moyes has until 6pm on Jan. 15, 2014 to respond to the charge.”
