Moyes admits to RVP gamble

Manchester United manager David Moyes admits he gambled on the fitness of star striker Robin van Persie.

• Payne: Transfer plan at Manchester United
• Okwonga: A tale of two flanks

Van Persie pulled up injured during the Champions League fixture against Shakhtar Donetsk, a game which quickly followed United’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle.

And Moyes has now revealed that the Netherlands international played the entire 90 minutes against Newcastle with a sore groin.

Van Persie will miss his seventh match of the season after failing to recover in time for Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Swansea.

“I think if I’d brought him off (against Newcastle) some people would say ‘What are you doing? You are 1-0 down and you’re taking off your top goalscorer,’” Moyes said.

“I think that answers why I left him on. Robin had a sore groin and, after he played really well against Arsenal, we gave him a week’s holiday to recover. When he came back he hasn’t really been right since then.

“He played against Newcastle and then in the next game he pulled his thigh taking a corner.

“But I think we have looked to do things correctly.”

But in better new for United’s injury list, Moyes believes that Wayne Rooney will not need surgery for a groin injury.

“Wayne won’t need surgery. It’s a slight strain and the sort of thing a couple of weeks might fix,” Moyes said.
