Moyes: I'm not looking to sign striker

Manchester United manager David Moyes has said he will not try to sign a striker in the January transfer window.

• Okwonga: A return to business as usual at Old Trafford

Moyes -- whose side beat West Ham 3-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday -- is keen to strengthen his squad, but is confident he already has enough high-quality options in attack.

United have been linked with moves for Monaco’s Radamel Falcao and Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa, but the manager believes that, in Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, he already has the finest duo in the Premier League.

Danny Welbeck, who has scored three goals in as many games, and Javier Hernandez complete a quartet of centre-forwards, while Moyes also has attacking midfielders who can operate as a No. 10.

He told British Sunday newspapers: “We are not in desperate need of an out-and-out centre-forward.

“It’s easy for people to throw up names, but you have to look at it closely. We’ve got Van Persie, Rooney, Hernandez and Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa can play in behind a front man, too, so we are well covered.”

While Manchester City’s Alvaro Negredo and Sergio Aguero and Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez have competing claims to be the best strike partnership in England, Moyes reiterated his view that his first-choice attackers are the equal of any duo in the division.

He added: “Van Persie and Rooney, with his form this year, are a mark for any of the top strikers.”

Van Persie is currently sidelined with a thigh injury, but Moyes is hopeful the Dutchman will be able to return soon.

He explained: “Robin is progressing. He’s doing quite well. He’s feeling quite good, but we’ve got to make sure.

“He has had a similar injury at Arsenal on his thigh, so it’s something we have to make sure that wouldn’t be repeated. We will try to do it steadily.”
