Alarm bells sounding for Everton

United 'should have gone for Barkley'

It was almost 12 months to the day since Darren Fletcher made his last Premier League appearance.

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen believes United boss David Moyes should have pursued Ross Barkley instead of Marouane Fellaini over the summer.

Fellaini, 26, moved to Old Trafford in the summer for 27.5 million pounds after five successful years at Goodison Park.

However, the Belgium international has struggled to recapture the form he enjoyed under Moyes at Everton, while England's Barkley has shone in his absence this season.

"Moyes would have expected an instant return on investment when buying Marouane Fellaini. I rate him highly in a certain type of team, but I’m not sure he is a Manchester United player," Owen told Sportslobster.

"Moyes would have been better served by breaking the bank for another of Everton's players.

"A team consisting of two of the best youngsters in the Premier League, Adnan Januzaj and Ross Barkley, would have immediately sent out the message that Moyes is building a team to last."

And he voiced confidence in the United manager, despite his sometimes difficult start to life at Old Trafford, saying: "There is no doubt in my mind that David Moyes will be a huge success at Manchester United for years to come."
