Alexander Buttner ready to fill in for Evra

Manchester United manager David Moyes says he was happy to top Group A on his first full UEFA Champions League experience.

Alexander Buttner said he is ready and able to replace Patrice Evra against Aston Villa on Sunday if Manchester United’s first-choice left-back is not fit.

Brewin: Job done for United

France international Evra, 32, did not train on Monday and missed United’s 1-0 Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk, although he is not expected to be a long-term absentee.

Buttner deputised against the Ukrainian champions but had to be replaced in the final few minutes, but the Dutchman has allayed fears he will be forced to sit out Sunday’s match at Villa Park.

He said: “I had cramp in my calf because I've not played for a long time. That was my first game in a month and the last few minutes I was tired. I am OK for the weekend. I don't know whether Patrice's injury is bad.”

United have lost back-to-back Premier League games against Everton and Newcastle but Buttner believes the victory against Shakhtar has provided a vital boost to their morale.

He added: "It was good for the team and after recent games to win is good for confidence. It was a very important win.

"We have been a bit unlucky in the league but we have done well in the Champions League and hopefully we can go on a run in the league and beat Villa in the next game.”

Buttner has only made one Premier League appearance this season, in September’s 2-1 home defeat to West Bromwich Albion.
