Kinnear: Bonus only for top-half finish

Joe Kinnear has confirmed that Newcastle's players will only receive a bonus if they finish in the top half this season.

Kinnear's return to Newcastle has proved controversial among fans
Joe Kinnear said that players will only receive a bonus of the club finishes in the top half of the season.

The Magpies only narrowly avoided relegation last season following the decision to sign five new French players in January.

Guaranteed safety with a win against Queens Park Rangers on the penultimate weekend of the season, the Magpies have begun this season brightly and currently sit in 8th place in the Premier League.

Speaking in his programme notes ahead of Saturday's clash with Norwich City at St James' Park, director of football Kinnear confirmed that the squad will only see a bonus if they end the season in the top half -- compared to last season when a finish as high as 12th would have seen them earn extra.

"While the supporters see the togetherness was on the pitch they rarely see the great unity that exists in all other areas of the club," Kinnear said.

"I want to emphasise this by making reference to the bonus scheme agreed at the beginning of the season, which for this season, will only pay out if the team finishes in tenth place or higher. Everyone who works here has bought into this concept. Me, the football staff including the manager, the directors and all the eligible administrative staff employed at Newcastle United - we are together.

"What has been especially pleasing is the willingness of the players to sign up to our scheme as our employees. Last season, our players would have received a bonus for a 12th-place finish or higher. You might think that after the season we had last year there may have been some reluctance to raising the bar this season, but the exact opposite is true."
