Laudrup featured in the Spanish clash for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, while he also experienced the derbies of Turin, Rome and Copenhagen during his playing days.

However, the Dane feels Sunday’s first Premier League clash between Swansea and Cardiff City is just as big as any other game around the world in the eyes of the two sets of fans.

“These are special games, whether it is Lazio against Roma, Copenhagen against Brondby, Juventus against Torino, or Madrid against Barcelona,” he told the Daily Mirror.

“Whenever it is and wherever it is, whatever country, it is always something special to be involved because you know it means a lot to a lot of people.”

While Laudrup is relaxed ahead of his first South Wales derby, he wants his players to understand how much the game means to the club’s supporters.

“It’s just words,” he said. “I know a lot of people will talk about this game when my players are out on the streets this week, whether it is for a coffee of just to go to the shops.

“The fans will say to them, ‘Hey, we’ve got to win’. But that’s OK. That means the players really understand how important it is to the fans.

“The next game [after Cardiff] is important as well, but the players will realise how important this game is for the fans, and the game we will play here in March. Fans want to win all games -- but there are some that are so special.”
