Moyes wants new Nemanja Vidic deal

David Moyes is keen for Manchester United to give Nemanja Vidic a new contract and has described his captain as the finest central defender he has coached.

Okwonga: Jones, the closer of Old Trafford

Vidic’s current deal, which was signed in 2010, expires next summer but manager Moyes wants to keep the 31-year-old at Old Trafford for longer.

The Serb, who joined United from Spartak Moscow for £7 million in 2006, has made 271 appearances for the Premier League champions, and Moyes believes he can carry on playing at the top level for several more years.

He told British daily newspapers: “I didn't know about Vida's contract. I have not looked into it yet. I am sure the chief executive and the club will be doing that.

"He's not old. He is a really top centre-half. The best I have worked with, that's for sure."

Moyes has kept faith with the established central-defensive partnership of Vidic and Rio Ferdinand and has been impressed with them, despite last week’s 4-1 derby defeat to Manchester City.

He added: “They are two top centre halves. Vida is probably the best centre half I have ever worked with. He is that good, he really is.

"Rio has really impressed me with how fit he has been. He has not missed a day's training since we have been back. If you took away the City game you are finding it hard to pick faults in any of them.”
