David Silva expected to face Bayern

David Silva faces a race against time to be fit to face Bayern Munich in next week's Champions League match, but manager Manuel Pellegrini believes he will win it.

David Silva: Out of sorts
Silva could make a much welcomed return against Bayern.

The Spain winger has sat out Manchester City's last four games with a thigh injury and is a major doubt for Saturday's Premier League match at Aston Villa.

But Pellegrini hopes the World Cup winner, who sustained the problem on international duty, will be available again when the European champions visit Manchester on October 2.

He said: "We will see in the next days what happens with David. The doctor can say better than me what [the recovery time is]. I don't think he can play on Saturday but maybe for the next game of Champions League, I think he could be fit."

The City manager was speaking after his side advanced to the fourth round of the Capital One Cup with a 5-0 win over Wigan.

Stevan Jovetic opened his City account with a second-half brace, his first goals since his £24 million summer move from Fiorentina, and Pellegrini praised the Montenegrin.

"I think it is very important for Stevan," he added. "I am sure he is going to be a really important player for us. I think he really played well in the second half and I am very happy with him."
