Wenger excited by Ozil-Wilshere link

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has backed Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere to form a potent partnership in the Gunners' midfield for many years to come.

Ozil was accompanied by Wenger to his first Arsenal press conference.
Ozil will likely get his first taste of football for Arsenal against Sunderland this weekend.

Ozil looks set to make his Premier League debut alongside Wilshere as Arsenal travel to Sunderland this weekend, with Wenger talking up the prospects for his dynamic offensive-minded midfield duo.

"Jack Wilshere is more comfortable in deeper positions and Ozil more in a higher position, that is why I don’t think they conflict," said Wenger, who is set to be without Czech midfielder Tomas Rosicky at the Stadium of Light after he suffered a thigh injury on international duty.

"I didn't always think that, but looking at Jack over the years now, he likes to come deep to take the ball and make a difference, and then give and go again. Ozil, though, is more behind the striker, higher up on the field. It is an exciting combination."

Wenger believes Ozil can take his game to a new level at Arsenal as, even though the Gunners spent £42.4 million to sign him from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, the Gunners boss is convinced his star signing is yet to fulfil all of his potential.

"Ozil has the personality to express his game, which is for me the most important," he added. "He is a creative player and that is what we want from him, to express his talent and develop it.

"If you look well at his record, his assists are fantastic, his goal scoring record there is room for improvement. In the next few years, you expect him to combine those two together."
