Clarke: Transfer window creates panic

Steve Clarke has hit out at the timing of the transfer window by insisting it creates panic among clubs - but says he has not fallen out with Steve Bruce over Shane Long's collapsed move to Hull.

• Evans: West Brom's transfers

West Bromwich Albion's head coach secured four deadline-day deals but believes the time for doing business should end before the season’s start.

And he has made it clear there are no hard feelings between he and Bruce after the plug was pulled on the plan to take Republic of Ireland international Long to Humberside.

"I spoke to Steve the day after," Clarke said. "There is no issue with me and him, none whatsoever. He's a good guy.

"I don't think he has my phone number but I got one for him and called him. We just had a chat and spoke about how dreadful the last day of the transfer window is.

"It's a bit of a cattle market and it's not correct because there are so many deals flying around and so many things that have been said.

"So many people tried to cut in on deals. Everybody panics a little bit and tries to squeeze everything into 24 hours.

"If the deadline was in the summer, clubs would look at doing their business in those months and try to get everything in place for the first game rather than see how they start and then react."

Long flew to Humberside from the Republic's training base on deadline day, only to be left high and dry and be left wondering how big a part of Clarke's plans he is.

Talks were planned yesterday between the coach and player, with whom talks over a new Hawthorns contract had stalled.

"It is just business," Clarke added. "The club made a decision and it was the right thing for them. Very quickly, the bid collapsed and everything that was said in the club statement is pretty true. Since then, everything has gone a bit quiet.

"That is the way it should be and now it is for me and Shane to work out the best way forward. It was a club decision and obviously I had an input. I am part of the club."

Long is waiting to learn whether he keeps his place for Saturday's game at Fulham following the big-money arrivals of Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe.
