I'll cope with Arnautovic - Hughes

Stoke manager Mark Hughes has said he believes he will be able to ensure that Marko Arnautovic makes the right kind of impact at the Britannia Stadium.

Werder Bremen climbed above Monchengladbach in a 4-0 win.
Arnautovic has been involved in controversies in the past.

• Brewin: Hughes renaissance
• Whittaker: Successful window

Hughes brought Austria international Arnautovic, who has had a controversial past, to the Potteries in a £2.6 million deal from Werder Bremen.

Arnautovic, 24, was described as a "little boy" after falling out with Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho and was disciplined for fighting with a team-mate on the training ground at Bremen.

Hughes said he accepted that the signing could be seen as something of a risk, but added: "He's a young man who's obviously had a few issues in the past, but I was really impressed with him.

"I think Marko is a character, and everybody bemoans the fact there are not enough characters in the game. He's got a personality that I suppose on occasions will need managing, but I've had difficult customers before and it's never fazed me.

"Having met him face-to-face, he's a young man who has a point to prove. People will very quickly see what an outstanding talent he is.

"In terms of his power and pace, which is something I think we need in the squad, he ticks all the boxes. Technically, he's excellent, and I'm really looking forward to working with him. I think it's quite a coup to get him here.”

Hughes said he also believed he could get Stephen Ireland's career back on track after signing the midfielder -- who played for him at Manchester City -- on a season-long loan from Aston Villa.

"There's a lot of reasons why it hasn't gone well for him, and it's got nothing to do with him as a player or a person,” he said.

"Circumstances changed [at Villa] and managers went. He just needs to get his career back on track where he will get given game time. His fitness is a bit short at the moment because he hasn't had much game time since January."
